What to expect from eduMe's interview process for engineers

Chris Class
Chris Class

Interviewing for any kind of role can sometimes be a daunting and stressful experience, especially when you don’t know what to expect during the interview process and feel left in the dark.

At eduMe, we want your interview experience with us to be up there with the best of them, regardless of the outcome. Our desire is to make sure that every candidate is set up for success from the very beginning.

One of the ways we can do that is by being transparent about what our interview process looks like (in fact, acting on transparency is one of our core company values).

So, whether you’re thinking of applying to one of our Engineering roles, or are already in the process, you can read on to learn what’s involved, what we’re looking for, and who you’ll meet at each stage of your application.

Overview

Here’s a quick overview of our interview process in Engineering:

  • Recruiter screen
  • First stage - Engineer Interview
  • Second stage - Coding Challenge
  • Final stage - Technical, Ways of Working, Culture & Values Interviews

We’re always iterating over our interview process to ensure that we’re not only hiring the best people, but also providing a great experience for everyone. So there’s a chance this could change but if it does, we’ll let you know.

We also strive to make our process as straightforward and inclusive as possible, so if there’s anything we can do to better accommodate you, let us know.

Recruiter screen 👋

If your application looks like a match for the role, we’ll arrange a brief chat to learn about you, your experience, and why you applied to eduMe.

What we’re looking for

During the recruiter screen, we’ll be looking to learn about any relevant skills and experience you could bring to the team.

You’ll also get to learn more about eduMe, our Product & Engineering team, and our mission to build the world’s most powerful Workforce Success platform.

Who you’ll meet

One of our talent partners, such as Imogen.

First stage: Engineer Interview 🧑

You’ll meet one of our engineers who’ll dive a little deeper into your relevant technical skills, experience and how you’d work with the rest of the team.

What we’re looking for

We’ll ask some high-level technical questions related to your experience in order to be certain you’re a match for the role. We’ll also be looking to get a feel for what it would be like to have you as part of the team.

Who you’ll meet

An engineer or hiring manager from one of our cross-functional product tribes.

Second stage: Coding Challenge 💻

At this stage, we’ll ask you to complete a technical challenge either in your own time or, for some roles, remotely with a group of our engineers (we’re flexible, the choice is yours). This is a chance to put your technical skills into action.

Because we have different kinds of Engineering roles, the task we ask you to complete will be tailored to the specific role you’re applying for.

What we’re looking for

Whatever option you choose (take home or remote) you’ll be evaluated on your backend, frontend, and testing capabilities. If you choose the ‘take home’ option, we’ll also be interested in how you’ve structured and documented your project.

  • Take home
    • We'd really like it if you returned your submission to us within a week, but we understand that you might have more important things happening in your life — if you need more time, just let us know.
  • Remote
    • You also have the option of doing the Coding Challenge remotely
    • You’ll complete the same exercise as the take home task, but with the opportunity to openly discuss your approach and solution with a group of our engineers as you work through it.
    • Your time is valuable, so we combine this session with the Technical Interview

Final stage: Technical Interview, Ways of Working, and Culture & Values

The final leg of our interview process comprises a technical interview, a ways of working interview with members of our Product team, and, to wrap things up, a chat with our CTO or Engineering Director focused around our company culture and values.

Part One: Technical Interview

What we're looking for

We’re interested in hearing about your approach to technical problem solving, especially when it comes to the coding challenge — we’ll want to discuss this in more detail and will probably have specific questions related to your submission.

We’ll also look to gauge your ability to work with relational databases through a short exercise where we’ll ask you to demonstrate how you might structure and query a database.

Who you’ll meet

Several members of our Engineering team, including those who reviewed your coding challenge.

Part Two: Ways of Working

This is a non-technical session aimed at helping us learn how you like to work (and sharing with you how we like to work).

What we’re looking for

We believe collaboration and communication are key to building a world class product and we are looking for people who have demonstrated an ability to do this successfully with their colleagues.

Our Product & Engineering teams work very closely together from discovery, through implementation, and on to delivery. We’ll be looking for examples of how you’ve done this in the past, what you’ve learned works and doesn’t work, and how you might approach different situations that arise while building a product in fast-paced, product-first environment.

Who you’ll meet

Two or three members of our team across different roles in both Product & Engineering.

Part Three: Culture & Values Interview

We want to be sure you’re the right person for eduMe and that eduMe is the right place for you.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for people who do more than just ‘fit in’ — we believe in hiring great people who add to and strengthen our culture through their different experiences, areas of expertise, skills, and opinions.

We’d like to hear about your interviewing experience so far and where you see yourself having an impact at eduMe.

You’ll also have an opportunity to ask us any final questions about the team, the role, or the company.

Who you’ll meet

Our CTO, Mikko, or our Engineering Director, Chris. (that’s me!)

Join us, we’d love to welcome you to our engineering team!

We more than doubled our Engineering team last year and we’re planning even more growth in 2022.

If you’re looking for a new role or interested in what eduMe has to offer, head over to our careers page to see our open roles and learn more about our team.

If you don’t see anything that matches your interests or expertise right now, we’d still love to hear from you in case something opens up in the future – drop me a line on LinkedIn or send your CV over to our talent team.

We’re always looking to improve our interview experience and would love to hear from you if you have any feedback on how we can do better.

We’re looking forward to hearing from, or  better yet meeting, you soon.

Chris,

Engineering Director at eduMe
